When you know you are doing too much Chemistry......

Syndrome 1: When doing shopping, u will read the ingredient section and u will critcise using chemical language.
Exmaple: On an Aqium handwash bottle, in front said no alcohol but at the ingredient there is a chemical with a hydroxyl group on. So when the salewoman saying to you that it is a very good handwash and blah, blah, blah... Your reply is: does a molecule containning a hydroxyl group not considered alcohol?!

Syndrome 2: When u read abbreviation, u think of chameistry context rather than the original context.
Example: When waiting to bank in money, u saw the back of the shirt of the lady in front of you written J.O.C., you will immediate think of Journal of Organic Chemisty but actually she is wearing her uniform of one of the cosmetic company.

Syndrome 3: Read chemistry more than anything else.
Example: When u are on the bus, poeple are reading over your shoulder and get amazed because you are not reading the news paper but some chemistry articles.

So people, if you think one or more of the above description(s) happening to you, you are definately doing too much chemistry!! Good on you!!!

Another interesting topic will be how (Chemistry) years old are you?
Honours has started almost 3 months and find that I've learnt so much about chemistry like I have never learn about it before. It's like a baby learning how to speak. So if you think about it this way, Uni. 1st year is a new born, undergrad. will be a 3 year-old kid and I will be a 4 (Chemistry) year-old child. Then all the prof. is 30+!! Woo... 30+ year doing chemistry, that is really doing a lot of CHEMISTRY.

Busy Week

I've been so busy trying to balance research life with my private life, not to mention taking time off to accompany my gf & also write up my interim report, which is due this Fri... anyways, here's a collection of pics taken from the lab last week. just thought I'd show you what its like and no, there are no colourful bubbling solutions and they are not all mized together. You rarely see smoke coming out from the RBF (round bottom flask). if it does, it usually indicates that you are in trouble... the next round of update will be more informative i hope. Enjoy!

During Experiment~

Do anyone knows what a chemist is?
(NOT a 'chemist' chemist, they don't make drug nor think of making one. They only sell and prescribe drugs!!)

1. They are the people besides doctors who always wear white coats.
(No, they sometimes wear it only if the reaction that they are doing is harmful.)
2. They wear funny glasses during their work.
(No, again, they only wear if it's needed to.)
3. They make bombs.
(No, that is a terrorist job.)
4. They make drugs.
(No, only some. At least I don't.)
5. They are crazy people.
(Well, I would say only some......)

I guess what a chemist really is that they investigate the core of matters.
They will look at a molecule and try to modify it or make other molecules interact with it so that they gain an understanding of the compound.
Or they will observe changes and try to find out what makes the changes, how it comes about and what we can do about it.
What I mean is that they look at molecule or even atomic scale stuff!!
So small that no wonder I have to wear glasses...... :p

Anyways, I guess I'm the only chemie who can type such a long blog at the same time doing the experiment.
Oh, just got some good new from the Mass Spect.~
Have I stuck a gold vein? Unbelievable!!
Need to digest this heavy text e-mail first.
Will update more after that.

Cheers!!

Hello fellow readers!

Hi there...

This is the 1st post! yeah! there will be more ranting on chemistry and hopefully some insights on our lives as well... its not just all about chemistry... still, everyone is welcomed to read this blog...

Cheers. And may everyone enjoy it!

Kev.
